Background
Nuclear Waste Services (NWS) brings together the UK’s leading nuclear waste management capabilities, by integrating the expertise of Low Level Waste Repository (LLWR), Radioactive Waste Management (RWM), and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) group’s Integrated Waste Management Programme (IWMP) we have created an organisation focused on the management of the UK’s nuclear waste, safely and securely for generations to come.
In April 2024, the NWS Business Improvement Capability embarked on their Lean Competency System (LCS) journey, making a pivotal step towards organisational efficiency and innovation.
NWS’s commitment to continuous improvement was given the official seal of approval by LCS in May 2024 when they obtained the company accreditation.
Activity
The Business Improvement Capability have demonstrated a strong commitment to collaboration and professional growth as they advance the LCS journey. Working closely with both NDA Group Counterparts and internal stakeholders, the team have developed and introduced a number of comprehensive training packages, accredited by LCS which are tailored to enhance understanding and application of the Lean Principles, including:
- LCS Level 1a – Business Improvement Awareness - Instructor led (classroom & virtual delivery)

The team have embraced new ways of working, contributing to a unified, strategic approach that maximises efficiencies and fosters a culture of continuous improvements across NWS, all while advancing their own learning to become recognised Subject Matter Experts.
The Impact
By championing LCS methods and engaging stakeholders at every level, the team have established a strong foundation for a more agile and resilient organisation and have begun to streamline processes by empowering colleagues with tools and knowledge essential for sustainable long-term growth whilst completing their own training and upskilling.
To date, several impactful improvements have been implemented including:
- Streamline of meeting and reporting structures saving over 1000 hrs per year
- Introduction of SQCDP on NWS’s Operational Site with further rollout planned
- Introduction of Loss Logging, aligning losses to SQCDP
In addition, the team are supporting a number of innovative ways of working trails including:
- The use of handheld devices at NWS’s Operational Site
- The use of Artificial Intelligence across the business
The teams’ achievements to date, underscore their role as a driving force in our organisations journey towards excellence. Their efforts over the last 8 months illustrate the values and goals that the LCS Award seeks to recognise, making them truly deserving.
