Background
The Hilti Global Logistics Organization annually awards the Living Lean Award to the region that has most successfully implemented lean practices and systems, demonstrating significant impact and people engagement. This year, the LA1 region won the award for their “We Are All Lean” program. The program was initiated three years ago to embed lean principles into daily operations, aiming to engage the team in continuous improvement activities. Over the years, the region made significant progress, consistently reaching the shortlist until finally winning the award this year.
Activity
The “We Are All Lean” program was structured to ensure comprehensive engagement and professional development. Key activities included embedding lean topics into personal yearly targets, offering structured and professional lean training through the Hilti LCS accredited futureskilling program, and incorporating lean topics into internal performance management meetings. The region also created opportunities for sharing experiences and mentoring team members, while tracking, sharing, and celebrating real impact. The program involved 58 out of 73 employees, achieving an 80% engagement rate, and extended its impact beyond logistics to cross-functional teams such as finance, sales, marketing and customer services, as well as third-party logistics providers.

The Impact
The “We Are All Lean” program delivered remarkable results:
- 75% of employees achieving LCS certification at the expected level
- 80% of employees engaging in continuous improvement activities, generating 800K CHF in value creation
- 7% reduction in total logistics costs
- reduced inventory to 87 days on hand
- improved customer experience with on-time in-full delivery reaching 85.7%.
